Rok!

Welcome back! These all look amazing, well done. Too bad about the professor, can’t teach an old dog new tricks and all that.

Just an update on some structure thins: I’m sue you know by now that your friend Mel has joined the team too as our manuscript reader. Mel already brought up the concrn that you’d be seeing too much of each othr if you’re working in the same cubicle all day, but I promise both of you hat you’ll be dong enough different stuff that you won’t even notice. In other words, SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUP!

ALSO, just when I thought we were all set, our interior designer, Arthur, has moved teams to replace Nick, meaing we are once again short a position. If you happen to know any people with computer know-how who’d be interested in desining book interiors, now’s the time to trot them out!

Otherwise, won’t need anything until Monday. Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Ashley,

Just got home from the retreat. Per your request, here are picture of the 17 pieces I worked on out there. I know you said you wanted them to match the in-house style, but the professor also wanted them in specific styles and started getting mad at me after the first few. I’ve been practicing though, as I think you’ll be able to tell, especially #4.

Please let me know if you need anything else, although I’m probably not going to be checking my email or the rest of the day. I’ll see you Monday.

Annabelle, excellent! Yes, please, do reach out to them, and at the very least get me their contact info (if you’re comfotable with that, but you know first hand hw well we’ll be able to treat them). Come talk to me at y cubicle and we’ll get you started.

Mel, alas, still looks like you’ve got a lot more work to do anyways. Keep hitting he books for now (remember, you volunteered)!

Thanks, everyone!

P.S. Anyone know what this “Leadership Conference” ting Naomi’s going to is? I can’t find anything about it.

Hey Ashley,

I can hlp out too, if you need. I hang out with a few writers every now nd then, I think I could talk a few of them into submitting.

Do you have any specifics I can tell them about what we’re looking for?

Cheers!

Does anyone have time today to help me shake th phone tree? There’s been a recent decrease in the amount of new project’s we’re getting in—nothing to be worried about, but if you find yourself with nothing to do, I would really appreciate it if you ade some clls on my ‘potential clients’ sheet. Most of them don’t answer, so there’s an easy script telling them to call me back, and it’ll be good cold-calling experience. If you’re interested, please let me know.

Ric!

Log time, no talk! I’ll keep ths short, I hear That Other Publisher is doing really well these days. I talk about what I think I can bring to the team in my cover letter, so I’ll just say here that I’ve been following your career since Just My Luck and am a fan. It would be a pleasure to work together again.

Hi Ashley,

I’m trying to be reasonable wth this author, but… well, just look at the screenshot.

Do I really have to keep working with him? It seems pretty lear he’s not going to respect my opinion at all, or any woman’s in the Union. Is there a male editor we can unload him onto?

Hey Ashley,

Haven’t heard from Rok in a few days. Did we lose another one? Hope we didn’t scare him off when all the illustratos got together.

Only asking because there was still a few training points I wanted to go through with him, but if there’s no point to it I’d rather not waste the energy.

Hope you re having a blessed morning.

Hey Naomi,

I can’t remember if you said you were coming in today or not, nor can I remember if you ever told me what you were using the week off for, but what is this Fictograd Leadership Conference thing? Seems like the kind of thing I could really benefit from. Is there an open spot for one more? I don’t even need to attend any of the talks, if there’s like a showroom floor or something, or a mixer afterwards… just let me know, please?

Hello all,

Just a reminder that I will be out of the office next week while attending the Fictograd Leadership Conference. The team managers will be coordinating coverage of my responsibilities, but if you have anything that absolutely needs my attention I will still be monitoring my inbox. Please use “URGENT” in the subject line if you cannot bring your issue to your team manager and it cannot wait until the week after next. I will do my best to respond, but I also reserve the right to decide your issue is not urgent and not reply until next month.

Thanks.

Thanks for reading. This week, I'm helping to grow the substack fiction community by spotlighting The Tidewater Papers, a newsletter of serialized fiction by Joseph W. Knowles. On Tuesdays, he publishes installments of his early American alternate history novel, Fit for Freedom. Here's an excerpt from part 3:

For his part, Nat Aldridge didn’t see the appeal at all. A crowd of unwashed, shouting men, throwing away their hard-earned money betting on which of a pair of gamecocks could kill the other. At this particular ring the fowl were not equipped with the metal spurs typical elsewhere. What possible interest such a stipulation could add to the bloody affair did not occur to Nat. He would be the first to admit he was a ruffian, but he reasoned that he had seen enough blood-soaked ground during the war. Only Mr. Tobin’s business was enough to force him into such a pit of foolishness and gratuitous carnage.
